Sadler & Whitehead History

Established in 1997 by Mimi Sadler and Camden Whitehead, our Richmond-based, women-owned business has focused on historic preservation and adaptive reuse for over a quarter of a century. We are now managed by long-time associates, Catherine Easterling and Kathleen Morgan, who continue the legacy of people-centric preservation.

Sadler & Whitehead has worked with many clients across Virginia and other states to complete state and federal historic rehabilitation tax credit projects for public and private entities. Our strength lies in our ability to help generate modern solutions without compromising a building’s historic character, all within the confines of current regulations and requirements.

While most of our work consists of tax credit rehabilitations, we also assist our clients with state environmental reviews, Section 106 consultations, local historic district design overlays, and we are happy to provide historic preservation reports tailored to your project needs and challenges.

We have an excellent record of achieving project goals for compliance and certification, and we maintain regular contact with State Historic Preservation Offices, with the National Park Service, and with other historic preservation agencies and organizations.

Catherine Easterling

Principal

Catherine is a consensus builder and collaborator. Her specialties include research and providing tax credit guidance to historic property owners.

Catherine received a BA in Historic Preservation and Art History from the University of Mary Washington and earned her master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Virginia Commonwealth University. Before joining Sadler & Whitehead in 2014, she administered the Richmond’s Old and Historic District program and was Secretary to the City’s Commission of Architectural Review.

When she’s not working on historic rehabilitation projects, you’re likely to find Catherine walking along the banks of the James River with her pit bull Milton or at home curled up with a book and her cats, Emily and Charlotte.

Kathleen Morgan

Principal

Kathleen believes in preservation’s capacity to bring communities together and to help maintain a sense of place. For her, craftsmanship, natural materials, and good design distinguish historic buildings, and she appreciates when these qualities are incorporated in contemporary design.

After graduating from the University of Mary Washington, Kathleen worked for Historic Richmond where she advocated for Richmond’s many historic neighborhoods.

She learned the ropes of local government as Preservation Planner and then Zoning Administrator for the City of Petersburg. Kathleen served on Petersburg’s Architectural Review Board and Board of Zoning Appeals, and she currently serves on Richmond’s Commission of Architectural Review.

Kathleen tries to spend as much time outside as possible, whether it’s walking her and her partner’s two dogs, attempting to grow her own food, or relaxing by any nearby body of water.
